Ludic culture in education : why playing is important at school

Is ludic culture in education a right solution for a

better affective and cognitive development for children ?

  • What's ludic culture exactly ?

Ludic culture is closely related to hobby, entertainment and playing. It takes several forms : it can be society games, video games, role games or toys like Legos, Playmobil, etc...

Playing is a natural thing for children then basically, ludic culture is innate for them. Therefore in my opinion, playing in childhood is the best tool to learn new things.

But what do they learn in playing exactly ?

  • Benefits of ludic culture in childhood development

Ludic culture's got several benefits for a child's development :

* The child's first nature

Playing is the first and main activity of childhood. Then this is their first and most natural way of learning.

* To make children focused and develop their concentration

Children love playing, it's a fact. They put all their attention and concentration in it because they are interested in it ! Then it's obviously easier to learn things by this way.

* To develop their imagination and creativity skills

Playing develops a child imagination and possibilities, because they're coping with real cases.

* To integrate with other children

Eventually, it's easier for a child to make contact with another kid in playing. When they're playing, children are all equal and they don't see any difference.

  • Ludic culture at school

Playing and learning are closely related in early childhood : ludic culture could be fully instaured in schools. It's the most natural way for children to learn by themselves and bloom. It's important that schools provide children with the opportunity to develop their imagination and possibility because it's also when they're at school that they learn many relevant things.

In order to accomplish this suggestion, schools have to equip children with spaces, props and the support they need to explore the world.

You need examples, propositions ? Here are some :

* The Mathbreakers - this is a learning video game for grades 1 to 6 for learning maths in an easier way, through fun.

* Lego / Playmobil - make children develop their imagination and creativity building and pretending with lego and playmobil !

Finally, we should not forget that ludic culture, playing is also a way for children to escape from « school conditioning ». A way to make them different and unique.
